The Socialization Program
Down Home Academy Socialization Program (8–12 Weeks)
Our Down Home Academy Socialization Program gives puppies extra time with their mom and
littermates, helping them develop important social skills before heading to their forever homes. This
additional time greatly benefits their growth by reducing the biting stage, improving sleep patterns, and
allowing them to mature before starting training.
Why We Prioritize Socialization First
At Down Home Academy, we do not believe in putting high-pressure training on puppies between 8 and 12 weeks of age. With 13 years of Bernedoodle training experience, we have found that properly socializing puppies before introducing formal training sets them up for success. We were the first Bernedoodle breeder to start a structured training program, and over the years, We have raised and trained hundreds of Bernedoodles. Puppies who complete our socialization program first and then start our Tiny Paws Training Program at 12 weeks old learn faster and retain information better.

Why 12 Weeks is the Best Time to Start Training
Over the years, we have learned that when people bring home an 8-week-old puppy, they often find themselves burnt out on puppy training by the time their puppy reaches 12 weeks of age. Unfortunately, this is when training really starts sinking in and when puppies are most ready to absorb and retain information.
Our clients who take their puppy home at 12 weeks old are able to hit the ground running with training,
establish good habits right away, and start training when it actually counts.

Crate Training
During the socialization program, we introduce gentle crate training by crating puppies with their siblings for short periods during car rides and nap time. This allows them to experience the crate in a positive, low-stress way.
However, we do not start a formal crate training program until they are 12 weeks old, as older puppies
are better able to handle the stress and adjustment that comes with independent crate training.
